Making Our Recipients
Part of the Team

After conducting a food preferences survey, we developed a clearer understanding of the different foods preferred by our Latino and Anglo families. We began to offer choices instead of pre-packed bags of food.

By encouraging our recipients to choose between offerings, they have become more comfortable discussing what they do and do not like, and more willing to try unfamiliar items. They select the food that they want, and do not take food that they do not need. By offering choice, we accord respect to our recipients and at the same time reduce waste.

We have also encouraged our recipients to help save us money by bringing their own recyclable bags. Some recipients give back to the food pantry by offering time and service. Bilingual recipients often help translate in the formal registration process and participate in weekly distribution.
