Volunteer Coordinator
Anne McCann
Anne is a retired teacher who loves connecting with all the incredible people she’s met through the food pantry…the recipients of course, but her interactions with our generous volunteers are what make her recognize what a special community Springs is. Springs Food Pantry makes her aware that the smallest acts can make a difference in people’s lives. The volunteers gain as much from their hard work as the recipients do.
Anne spent the majority of her career teaching 7th grade English in the Harrison Central School district in Westchester. She chaired the department and oversaw the transition to “workshop learning,” which allowed for more personal interaction with students. Perhaps that is what set her up for her position as Volunteer Coordinator. In this capacity she fills over 50 volunteer positions that are necessary to run the pantry each week. The Monday crew brings out groceries to be packed by the Tuesday crew. The Wednesday morning staff receives deliveries from the farms, packs fruit and produce, and delivers to home-bound families. Wednesday afternoon, our handout time, we have staff to check in families, direct traffic, and pack the various components of distribution (dry goods, produce, fruit as well as milk, eggs and meat).
Anne has had a home in Springs since 1976, spending summers here with her husband and two sons. She’s lived here full time since 2004. In early retirement she volunteered at Springs School and EHHS helping students with their writing skills, and tutored for the SATs, but when she found her way to Springs Food Pantry in 2015, she knew that was where she wanted to focus her efforts.
